One of CARFAC’s first representatives, multidisciplinary artist Vera Frenkel lives and works in Toronto. Her installations and media works have been shown at the Venice Biennale; Documenta IX; the Museum of Modern Art; the National Gallery of Canada, and the Freud Museum, London, among other major venues, most recently at the MAK (Museum für Angewandte Kunst), Vienna. Her touring project on the inner life of a dysfunctional cultural organization, The Institute™: Or, What We Do for Love (www.the-national-institute.org/tour), received the 2004 CCCA Untitled Art Award for best new media project, and in 2006 Frenkel received the Governor General’s Visual Art and New Media Award. City Poem/Poem City, her HD Penex-Metropolis commission for the Yonge/Dundas video board is currently on view, and the November première at the Muziekgebouw of her newest video, ONCE NEAR WATER: Notes from the Scaffolding Archive, accompanied by live performance by Continuum, will be seen again in Toronto at the Images Festival, April ’09. Of Memory and Displacement, a four-disc DVD/CD-ROM collection of Vera Frenkel’s videotapes, media works and writings, as well as commentary on her work is distributed by Vtape, Toronto.
