Call for Nominations – CARFAC National Board of Directors

Champion artists’ rights at the national level

CARFAC National is seeking nominations from professional visual artists interested in serving on its Board of Directors.

As the national voice of Canada’s professional visual artists, CARFAC National advocates for artists’ economic and legal rights, promotes fair compensation, strengthens working conditions, and supports a socio-economic climate in which visual artists can thrive. Serving on the Board is an opportunity to contribute your experience, perspective, and leadership to this work.

About the Board

The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance and strategic oversight of CARFAC National. Directors help establish organizational priorities, approve policies and budgets, oversee financial stewardship, and ensure that the organization continues to act in the best interests of professional visual artists across Canada.

Directors are expected to prepare for and participate actively in Board meetings, contribute thoughtfully to discussions and decisions, exercise sound judgment, and work collaboratively with fellow Directors. Directors may also serve on one or more Board committees and contribute to specific areas of governance or organizational work.

The Board generally meets quarterly, including one annual in-person meeting where possible. Board service is voluntary, and reasonable expenses incurred while carrying out Board duties are reimbursed in accordance with CARFAC National policy.

Directors are elected by the membership and serve a two-year term. Subject to the CARFAC National By-laws, Directors are eligible for re-election for up to three consecutive terms.

Who We Are Seeking

CARFAC National welcomes nominations from professional visual artists with a broad range of skills, backgrounds, artistic practices, experiences, and perspectives.

Candidates should demonstrate:

• a commitment to CARFAC National’s mission and the advancement of professional visual artists; 

• an interest in governance, advocacy, and organizational leadership; 

• the ability to contribute strategically and collaboratively; 

• sound judgment, integrity, and accountability; and 

• a willingness to dedicate the time required to participate meaningfully in Board and committee work. 

Candidates may bring experience in areas such as:

• professional visual arts practice and artist advocacy; 

• governance and organizational leadership; 

• finance, law, or public policy; 

• human resources and organizational development; 

• communications, fundraising, or public engagement; 

• Indigenous arts and cultural protocols; 

• equity, accessibility, and inclusion; or 

• service on the Board of a CARFAC Regional Affiliate or RAAV. 

Previous Board experience is an asset but is not required. CARFAC National particularly encourages nominations from current or former Board members of CARFAC Regional Affiliates and RAAV, whose regional knowledge and governance experience help maintain strong connections across the national CARFAC network.

Eligibility

In accordance with the CARFAC National By-laws, nominees must:

• be a Regular Voting Member of CARFAC National in good standing; 

• be a professional visual artist; 

• be at least 18 years of age; 

• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; 

• not be bankrupt; and 

• not have been declared incapable under applicable legislation.

Nomination Process

To be considered, applicants are asked to submit:

• a completed nomination form; 

• a brief statement of interest outlining why they wish to serve on the Board; 

• a current résumé or curriculum vitae; and 

• any additional information requested in the nomination package. 

The Nominations Committee will review all complete and eligible applications. Candidates may be invited to participate in an interview, provide references, or submit additional information as part of the review process.

The Nominations Committee will then develop a recommended slate of candidates for election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting.

Building a Strong and Representative Board

CARFAC National is committed to maintaining a Board that reflects the diversity of Canada’s professional visual arts community. Each year, the Nominations Committee considers the Board as a whole to achieve balanced representation across regions, artistic practices, lived experiences, governance experience, and professional skill sets.

As current Directors continue their terms, the Board’s needs evolve from year to year; for this reason, the Committee may prioritize candidates who bring specific perspectives, expertise, or regional representation.

We recognize that many highly qualified candidates may express interest in serving. While every nomination is carefully considered, not all qualified applicants can be recommended in a given year. A decision not to recommend a candidate should not be interpreted as a reflection of their qualifications or potential contribution. Members who are not selected are warmly encouraged to consider serving on a future Board, as organizational needs and Board composition change over time.
